How do you spot a biohacker in 2021? Look at their tricep. If it’s branded with a coin-sized contraption, that person is watching their blood-sugar levels with hawk-like intensity.
That small, round device is a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). Commonly used by diabetics, it tracks glucose rates in real time via a microneedle “installed” into the upper arm (painlessly, I’m told). A constellation of startups has devised apps that pair with these CGMs. These companies are positioning glucose levels as a new measure by which to guide changes in our diets, so – they promise – we can become our sharpest, most energetic selves.
If you have diabetes, or ever suspected that you might, you will have done the poke-your-finger-and-drop-blood-on-a-stick thing until your finger goes numb. Finger-prick blood glucose monitoring is the de facto standard, but AI companyies wants to put an end to all that, replacing the droplet with some off-the-shelf diagnostic tools and a big helping of data analysis.
These companies has developed different prototype devices that combines a three-lead ECG measurement and Photoplethysmogram (PPG). The 60-second measurement is fed to a set of algorithms that can give you some very promising measurements. For starters, the device is doing non-invasive blood glucose monitoring, but the companies’ founders claims that it can also do blood pressure measurements.
But are these HighTech companies changing our eating habits?
