Kinanya Pijl is a PhD researcher in law at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. She is a cum laude graduate of the Legal Research Master (LL.M) of Utrecht University and holds an LL.M degree in Comparative, European and International Laws of the European University Institute. She is passionate about the changing role and responsibilities of non-state actors in the international arena and specialises in legal research in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility.
Kinanya won the student prize for Best Master’s Thesis of Utrecht University 2014-2015 for her Master’s Thesis on ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) and Human Rights. She has worked as a staff member and consultant for the Council of Europe on the intersection of human rights and Internet governance. As a researcher for Utrecht University, she contributed to a book on corporate duties of care in Europe in the field of international corporate social responsibility and accountability.
More recently, Kinanya has been part of a team that has conducted a study on increasing leverage for responsible business conduct regarding human rights for the parties to the Dutch Banking Sector Agreement on international responsible business conduct regarding human rights.
