PhD dissertation-in-the-making:
Population Statistics and Demography in Imperial Russia and Post-Imperial Ukraine, 1880-1930
The main questions that guide my research are: How did statistics become associated with technocracy? How did statisticians' self-positioning and socio-political roles change at the turn of the century? After the war? What was the role of demographers in the governance in Soviet Ukraine during its first decade?
My side interest, which has not yet developed into a full-fledged project, is the role of social sciences and social scientists (broadly understood) during the transition of the late 1980s—early 1990s.
