Dr. Ivan Romashchenko has experience of studying various areas of law, including private law and public law. As far as private law is concerned, he has published numerous papers and participated in many conferences on company law, property law, contract law, roman law, intellectual property law, and private international law issues. In public law he has focused mainly on the EU law and on cultural rights within the broader category of human rights. The results of his research have been widely presented as he has more than 70 publications and has participated in more than 40 conferences and round tables. He has significant experience in comparative legal research. In 2020, he defended his PhD thesis “Related Party Transactions and Corporate Groups: When Eastern Europe Meets the West” at Leiden University with an extensive comparative overview of Dutch, German, Polish and EU company laws and published a book in Kluwer Law International. After his PhD defence he continued specializing in company law and in 2021 succeeded in obtaining funds from the European Social Fund to support his postdoctoral research project Digitalisation of Company Law in Selected Jurisdictions: Harmonization Challenges and Opportunities in Selected Jurisdictions (DigiCoL) as a Senior Researcher at the Law School’s Legal Technology Centre, Mykolas Romeris University. In 2023 Dr. Romashchenko received the Max Weber Fellowship at the European University Institute. As a Max Weber Fellow he had the research goal to assess the interconnection between digitalisation and human rights in company law, and to suggest recommendations for the improvement of regulations and practice in this area. In 2024 Dr. Romashchenko started working on the project 'Challenging Strategies: Related Party Transactions in the EU' as an MSCA YUFE4 Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Cyprus.
Throughout his research he has used various scientific methods, including empirical ones. For his PhD research he ran a survey among legal scholars and practitioners to uncover the existing issues about legal regulation of related party transactions and corporate groups. For the postdoctoral project he carried out a similar survey, but this time with Lithuanian big and medium-sized law firms, to understand the existing challenges and opportunities of company law digitalisation. For the latter research project, Dr. Romashchenko and his postdoctoral supervisor Prof. Virginijus Bitė contacted public authorities in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, and Ukraine to obtain the necessary data.
