Mateus Correia de Carvalho is a doctoral Researcher at the EUI's Law Department, under the supervision of Prof. Deirdre Curtin.

His work lies at the intersection of EU public law, critical legal studies and social theory, focusing currently on civil society participation in the EU's regulation of digital platforms. In his doctoral project, Mateus observes how institutional structures, bureaucratic practices and power dynamics at play in the implementation of EU law constrain whose voices, concerns and knowledge count as legitimate participatory contributions in this regulatory scheme and, in turn, how those dynamics affect concept and norm-building. As participation becomes a common feature of the enforcement of several fields of EU secondary law, Mateus seeks to offer broader insights, based on this observation of participation in EU digital regulation, into the institutional patterns, relations of domination and hegemonic meanings that limit and unequally distribute participation's meaningfulness in the EU.

Mateus holds a Bachelor of Laws from the NOVA School of Law of Lisbon and an LL.M in European Union Law from Maastricht University. He is furthermore an editor of the European Journal of Legal Studies.
